When you have adult acne and the signs of aging are creeping up on you, wouldn’t it be really great if there was a one stop shop for treatment of both? Keeping a simple routine is important for my lifestyle. I want a single regimen that does it all, and better yet, a single product. Is that even possible? Retinol
Luckily that unicorn does exist, and it’s RETINOL!
Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A, and a powerful ingredient for treating both acne and signs of aging (e.g., lines, dark spots and dehydrated skin). So why is it considered a skin must-have by both clean beauty enthusiasts and dermatologists alike?
- Retinol works by promoting cellular turnover, which treats both acne and aging. As the top layers of skin renew, younger looking skin is exposed. As this process occurs, acne-causing bacteria is also removed from the surface of the skin.
- As dead skin cells are removed, the complementary products you use are allowed to function to their maximum potential. Dead skin creates a barrier that prevents active ingredients from penetrating into the skin and doing their job. Without removing the dead skin, it would be like trying to put your night moisturizer over top a face of foundation. Not gonna work. So are you trying to spot treat a pimple with salicylic acid or add moisture with hyaluronic acid? Add retinol in your routine and let those ingredients work their magic.
- Retinol can be purchased without a prescription, so this magic potion is readily available to help you get your glow on immediately.
What retinol is best?
Because retinols help promote cellular turnover, some people may experience dryness, peeling and redness. Therefore, I have found that applying retinol that is in an oil form rather than cream drastically reduces the harsh side effects of creams without losing any of the benefits. You can check out my favorite retinol oil HERE.
For best results, use your retinol oil three times a week, and watch how you glow. And remember no form of retinol is advised for women who are pregnant or nursing.
