Direct sales (network marketing) is having a heyday, and for good reason. Women everywhere want to kick ass in their own lives, live empowered and be their own boss. And they are proud of their hustle! The Instagram hashtag #girlboss has been used over 7 million times. Typically with low barriers to entry and a nice payoff when you work your business, direct sales is an avenue many women are taking to have something that they can call their own.best direct sales company
So if you are one of these women, you might be asking, “How do I decide the best direct sales company to join?” Most people you ask will tell you they love their company, but what sets one apart from the rest? How do you know which company will bring you joy and fuel your passion?
What defines the best direct sales company?
Here are my opinions on the qualities the best direct sales companies embody and how to check if the company you are thinking about joining meets these important criteria:
1. A Mission That Wows
This is one of the most important topics to research. Knowing why a company was started and what they stand for can help you answer so many other questions. The best direct sales companies were born out of a passion to help women succeed in business. They should have people at the core of their mission. Otherwise, why not just sell the product in a store? When the business decisions reflect the mission, and the mission is you, the decisions will be in the best interest of you. Happy consultants spread the word, the company grows and you make money.
How To Check: Read the mission statement; it should be on the website. As a bonus, has it ever come directly from the leaders’ mouths? Follow the company’s YouTube channel, and the leaders’ personal Instagram/Twitter/Facebook. Leaders should live by their mission and be excited about the company and you. I also recommend asking others for their honest opinions; talk to both current and former consultants. It will make for a much happier road whether you intend it to be a side hustle or a long term career.
2. Products You Can Rave About
If you aren’t passionate about the products, no one else will be. The best direct sales companies have products people want and need, are high quality and most importantly YOU love them! If you love them, that usually means you can think of people who will love them too. They know their supply chain, don’t engage in any shady practices when sourcing, manufacturing, distributing and know that their suppliers do not either. Nobody likes to have to explain to their customers that they have a product recall.
How to Check: Try the products. Find a rep and see if she can give you samples or allow you try on the product. Purchase the products for a trial run. As a next step, do a little research to see where the products are made and if you are happy with that.
3. Generous Compensation
So important right? This is generally why people enter direct sales. They want some extra income, either a playcheck or a maybe a full-time paycheck. The best compensation plans allow consultants to earn on unlimited downlines many levels deep, and they may also offer monetary bonuses and other incentives like jewelry, trips, product rewards, etc.
How to Check: Most direct sales companies’ compensations plans can be found by googling. If you have narrowed down an industry, select a couple competitors in that industry and google the comp plan. A side-by-side comparison can help you decide. You can also find out more about incentive trips by asking existing consultants or keeping an eye on social media. Earners love sharing those trip photos!
4. Training and Motivation
The best direct sales companies have leaders that know the industry and can provide the right kind of tools and training. They supply you with awesome tech tools to help you sell on the go, at parties and from your home. They check on your progress and celebrate your successes. They may ask for your input, such as on product launches or product naming. In a nutshell, they value you as a person, consultant and company leader, which keeps you motivated and happy.
How to Check: Again, ask current and former consultants about the corporate training programs as well as trainings within the smaller team structures, which many teams often do on their own.
5. Zero or Minimal Inventory Requirements
This may be controversial, and remember, it’s only an opinion. Not all direct sales companies are the same. Companies requiring consultants to purchase and hold large amounts of inventory may come with a lot of risk. The initial investment can set you back, and if the company requires you to purchase each month to stay active, you risk going under water quickly if you are not prepared.
Inventory might be fine for you. My advice is to have a plan: 1) Know yourself and whether you can get in front of enough people to sell off your products and 2) Know your options. Will you be ok if you cannot sell it and lose money? Map out your best case scenario and your exit strategy if you need one. If you don’t feel comfortable after doing some planning, there are many companies that don’t require their consultants to purchase inventory. Personally, I am still a CPA at heart and that type of risk doesn’t make me feel warm and fuzzy, plus I do not like being surrounded by piles of stuff; it would drive me crazy!
How to Check: This should be clear on the company’s website. If the company doesn’t require the purchase of inventory, EZPZ, you’re done. If it does, the compensation plan or start up kit info should help you understand the costs and active requirements.
